River First-Aid Kit

What to Add to a Commercial First-Aid Kit

To get a great river first-aid kit, you can purchase a commercial first-aid kit and then add certain items. Here's how to do that using paddler-oriented first-aid kits by Adventure Medical Kits (AMK). See lists for Participant, Leader Requirements, Leader Recommendations, and Personal and River Safety. (AMK kits are for sale at Riptides and Rapids, as well as elsewhere.) Or you can build your own river first-aid kit.

PERSONAL AND RIVER SAFETY

LPP suggests also carrying at least these items for personal and river safety:

sunscreen
water purification tablets
personal medications
tampons (women)
$20 bill
AWA laminated emergency cards
prussiks (several)
tubular nylon webbing, pre-tied with water knot
whistle (on pfd)
rescue pulley
carabineers (including 2 locking ones)
throw rope
compass (if boating away from road)
spare clothing layers, such as capilene
Note: You might want to group like items in resealable plastic bags. Then put those bags into a dry bag. Many people find that having a dry bag dedicated to first aid works better than keeping first aid in the same dry bag with lunch and other items.
